Resté.es Debout
Resté.es Debout is a project that combines photographs and life stories.
The project gives a voice to the neighborhood's residents in Molenbeek (BE), allowing them to recount their journeys and trials, but also the strengths and strategies that have enabled them to resist and stand tall despite the difficulties.
Their stories reflect situations of great distress: exile, discrimination, gender-based and domestic violence, loss and/or lack of work, poor-quality housing, social isolation, a failing justice system, and more.
These moments in life make people vulnerable. They can cause pain, doubt, isolation, and make it more difficult to take care of oneself and look to the future.
Through these meetings and discussions, participants were invited to share their stories. Putting your story into words is an important act that allows you to better understand your own journey, but also to become aware of the social mechanisms that influence our life trajectories.
The portraits and stories presented here show how each person has found, in their own way, the resources to stand tall: to adapt, to resist, to forge connections, to keep moving forward.
By sharing these stories in the public sphere, Rester Debout invites everyone to recognize the strength of others—and to reflect on their own journey:
How did I, too, manage to stay strong in the face of what I went through?
-
This project was done in collaboration with D’Ici et d’Ailleurs, Pascale Jamoulle, Cristina Dantas (Logement Molenbeekois) and Laura Baiwir (Mimosa).
We would like to express our deep appreciation to the residents of the neighborhood for their trust, courage, and strength. We hope that this work will, in some small way, reveal their qualities to the world.
